An AI-Moderated Interview with W.G. Hilton
On Growth, Gear, and the Evolution of the Channel
AI Moderator:
You began creating content in 2014 under the Strive2Survive name. At the time, what was the original purpose of that channel?
W.G. Hilton:
Honestly, I was just trying to learn by sharing videos of items I had purchased and getting feedback from others. I had no real idea how to create videos properly. I was basically winging it, for lack of a better term.
AI Moderator:
Looking back now with more experience, what do you think Strive2Survive got right in those early years?
W.G. Hilton:
What S2S got right was the mindset. Anyone can buy a lot of gear, but if you don’t have the correct mindset in the face of whatever might come your way, then the gear—no matter how good it is—is basically useless.
AI Moderator:
On the other side of that question—where do you feel the channel fell short, either creatively or structurally?
W.G. Hilton:
It fell short on pretty much everything else. There was no real plan, no clear goal, and zero structure. So yeah—outside of mindset, it failed in just about every other aspect.
AI Moderator:
There was a noticeable gap between that era and your current work. What did stepping away from constant content creation teach you?
W.G. Hilton:
I’m not sure it taught me anything specific—other than patience. I think the break was needed, not just for me, but for the channel as well. We both benefited from it. Even though I wasn’t making videos, I spent a lot of that time thinking about what Strive2Survive could become instead of what it had been. I knew it needed to evolve; I just had to figure out how to make that happen.
AI Moderator:
You’ve referred to the current phase of the channel as an “upgrade.” Was that upgrade driven more by new equipment, or by a change in mindset?
W.G. Hilton:
Definitely not by new equipment. The upgrade was about approach and tone. The channel now has a more serious, more knowledgeable focus on gear that actually works. I’ve done some pretty crazy videos in the past—mostly just for laughs—and while that was fun, it lacked professionalism. Direction and professionalism are the new path. In fact, I haven’t purchased or received a new piece of EDC gear in over a year.
AI Moderator:
Compared to your earlier content, today’s videos show a clear shift in production quality and pacing. What lessons from the past most directly shaped those improvements?
W.G. Hilton:
Experience—almost twelve years of it. Getting comfortable seeing your face on camera, being relaxed while filming, or doing voice-over work all takes time. I’ll admit it took me longer than most, but I’m comfortable with it now. I’ve also learned how to properly edit videos and use DaVinci Resolve for all of my editing work.
AI Moderator:
The W.G. Hilton YouTube channel feels more focused than Strive2Survive ever was. How would you describe the core difference between the two?
W.G. Hilton:
Strive2Survive was my learning phase. W.G. Hilton is the accumulation of over a decade of experience. I’ll continue to learn and evolve, but WGH is S2S—just a more knowledgeable version of the same channel under a new brand.
AI Moderator:
Your approach to preparedness and everyday carry has evolved over time. How has your definition of “being prepared” changed since 2014?
W.G. Hilton:
Back in 2014, I was trying to prepare for everything—from my truck breaking down to a full-on apocalyptic event. If the years have taught me anything, it’s that nobody can be prepared for every possible scenario. Now I focus on personal well-being, the people around me, and situations that are actually likely to happen. Preparedness is no longer based on chaos theory—it’s based on real life.
AI Moderator:
Some creators chase trends aggressively. Others build slowly and deliberately. Where does the current channel fall on that spectrum?
W.G. Hilton:
Neither Strive2Survive nor WGH has ever chased trends. New gear and improved technology are great, but just because something is trendy doesn’t mean it’s good. I care about tools that work and perform above their price point. Those qualities matter more to me than hype.
AI Moderator:
What should viewers expect from the W.G. Hilton YouTube channel going forward—and just as importantly, what shouldn’t they expect?
W.G. Hilton:
It’s still me—that won’t change. I’m stubborn, but I try to stay open to learning and adapting as my understanding of gear evolves. What viewers shouldn’t expect is a return to experimenting with wild, out-of-genre videos. That chapter is closed.
AI Moderator:
If someone is discovering your work for the first time today, what do you hope they understand about the channel within the first few videos?
W.G. Hilton:
That I’m not trying to change anyone’s mindset—I’m simply sharing mine. I show how I approach gear, and I don’t promote junk or products designed to sell rather than be used.
